Design of Keys
Many options
The keys on a membrane switch keyboard form the basis for the functionality.
Consequently, the design of the keys is essential for the overall functionality
of the keyboard. Electronics further develops known - and approved - designs.
In this way, Electronics goes beyond the role of a mere supplier to contribute
significantly to development in keyboard design. Below, a couple of representative
examples of key types are described:
Flat keys - without embossing
When the keys are flat without any embossed features, some kind of activation
feedback is often an advantage, e.g. in the form of an acoustic signal or a visual
reaction on a display. Electronics also provides keys mounted with an underlying
metal dome/spring disc, which gives a tactile feedback - a click. Flat keys can
also be designed for use as slide potentiometer.
Keys - with frame embossing
Keys with frame embossing can be designed with or without tactility. The frame can
follow the circumference of the key or it can be used for embossing of logos, symbols,
numbers etc. Braille writing is also an option.
Embossed keys
Keys can be designed as poly dome or spring dome. The choice depends on e.g. application,
tactility and utility temperatures. With the graphical application of colours and varnish,
the visual 3D effect can be emphasized.
