Touch Foils

Touch screens are gaining ground and are more popular than ever. Mekoprint offers a less complicated and more cost effective printed touch foil alternative. Touch foils can be designed in a multitude of ways. Each design has its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

The development work of the customer's and Mekoprint's engineers ensures optimal solutions – not only for the touch foil but also for the total front solution.

ADVANTAGES

  • A natural replacement for traditional keys and touch screens
  • Is in line with the touch trend, and can be a more economical solution than traditional touch screens.
  • A flexible solution
  • A high level of automation throughout the production chain ensures consistent quality
  • Lower costs for individual parts contributes positively to a lower price for the complete application
  • Professional coaching and innovated collaboration (design for manufacturing)
  • Roll-to-roll production and delivery on rolls ready for high automation at the customer's place of production

AUTOMATED PRODUCTION

Production takes place in a fully automated setting using a roll-to-roll set-up which makes Mekoprint's touch foils highly competitive on a global scale.

The foils can be delivered on rolls that are prepared for fully automated pick-and-place at the customer's location.

CUSTOMISED

The size and shape of the electrode area can be designed to fit any graphic interface design.

A thin polymer foil is often used–typically PC or PET–where silver, carbon, transparent conductor and transparent lacquer can be screen printed. This provides full design freedom, giving the user a more user-friendly control panel.

FINALISATION

The flexible touch foil easily attaches to the back of the decorative front cover with a pressure sensitive adhesive.

The touch foil can also be used on curved and irregular surface designs.

Connecting to the underlying electronics is done with either spring or flat cable connectors.

BLACKENING EFFECT AND THE TOUCH FOIL MASK

There  are no "one size fits all" solutions when it comes to getting an optimal glass display effect.

It is important to take many parameters into consideration when a homogeneous black surface is to be produced.

The best optical solution entails applying some of the dark colour directly onto the glass, either printing it on or by using coloured glass. In this way, the black "stand-by" colour is highlighted in the LED, and at the same time, the touch foil is maximally masked.

Design and construction

The use of printed touch foils makes it possible to vary all of the important functions by creating a good optical appearance that entails colour, lacquer, texture, light diffusion and blackness.

The graphic foil can be a front foil or placed behind the glass. Embossing can be incorporated in key functions, or in combination with a touch foil in the event that a touch solution is desired.

The shorter the distance between the user's finger and the pressure sensitive area is, the less the total touch sensitive area be designed.

Environment

Electrical components are made of non-hazardous materials for easy and environmentally friendly disposal.

LIGHT DIFFUSION

Generally there are two solutions when using flexible foils to solve this issue. One of the solutions is to use a special transparent material with built-in diffusion. The other solution is to use standard materials combined with printing with translucent ink.

TRANSLUCENT INK

ADVANTAGES

- Low costs
- Flexibility in terms of design options (selected print areas, freedom of choice of substrates and colours),
- Degree of integration (printable directly on graphic or circuit foil).

DISADVANTAGES

- Lower light transmission efficacy compared to film directing light

DIFFUSION FILM

ADVANTAGES

- High transmission efficiency functionable under low light.
- It has a long lifetime
- Slightly better diffusion than with a printed solution

DISADVANTAGE

- Higher costs
- Very high MOQ
- Lower ability to customise as compared to printing
- Some foil materials are not suitable for additional graphic printing

Automated production

Screen printing on flexible foils in high-volume production is one of Mekoprint's core competences. We call it roll-to-roll production.

Mekoprint's facility allows for roll-to-roll production and post-processing without the involvement of manual processes.

COST OPTIMISATION

Roll-to-roll production can be advantageously used with the high-volume production of  homogeneous products.

As a customer you thereby gain lower costs of each item and a lower total cost of the total production, as with other forms of production.
